Job evaluation is a systematic way of valuing a job in relation to the other positions in a company. It systematically compares jobs to establish their value for the purposes of determining the rational pay. Job evaluation should not be confused with job appraisal. Job appraisal is documentation and evaluation an employee’s job performance (Carpenter, Bauer, & Erdogan, 2009). In this case, Ted was justified in insisting that they evaluate the job and not the persons holding the job. This was because they were not doing a performance appraisal for Rebecca but a job evaluation for receptionists.

Ted should have started by discussing what a job evaluation entails followed by the importance of the job evaluation. He should also have differentiated job evaluation from the performance appraisal and then proceeded to elaborate on the procedure of the job evaluation processes before presenting the jobs that were to be evaluated that day. This way, all the members of the job evaluation committee would have been reading from the same script. It is expected that Peter and Margo thought that their views were being ignored and forced into discussing something for which they were not prepared.
The committee was already aware of the jobs to be evaluated that day, and thus, after the clarification of issues to Peter and Margo, Ted would have shared all these jobs with all the committee members. The committee, after going through the job description, would agree on the method of job evaluation to be applied. This could be done according to the company’s way of doing things or by the committee’s discretion.
