On a saturday afternoon, visiting the Pacific Asia Museum as I walked in I have noticed how small the place is but there is an amazing amount of variety of art collection. When I walked in, the people around me are admiring each of the art pieces from the display. Walking to a quiet area, each individual are grasping every moments of how fantastic the pieces are. One of the part that captured my attention is that I absolutely loved is that some of the art pieces are passed down as generations from different collectors of the piece. This picture is black and white of young boy called Flavio, feeding rice to his younger brother Zacarias. My first impression of Flavio’s archive was that it seemed to be a very sad story. This photo shows the horrors of poverty and Flavio’s strength to survive, and even the courage to accept death without even thinking about himself but of his brothers and sisters. I did some research and found out that Flavio is a 12-year-old boy who has the huge responsibility of being an adult. He is able to accept this responsibility while still remaining vibrant and hopeful even though Flavio is suffering from a physical illness, poverty, overwork and worry.…

    John Mason Research Paper

John Mason isn't your average ceramist. He does things with clay that no other ceramist would've pondered. By pushing clay past it's normal plasticity levels, Mason created extravagant sculptures. He also makes geometric sculptures, like one of his most famous clay pieces; the Red X. I chose John Mason because I found it impressive the way he thinks of and makes clay pieces. He believed that making an art piece was like dancing; sometimes you're taught how, but sometimes you improvise.…

In this painting you can clearly see the three people but if you look beyond that you find another picture. The middle aged woman on the right has a light blue ribbon/curtain wrapping around her. In previous paintings Klimt uses blue as a representative for death. So its making its way up her body showing how much longer she has to live. It is nearly half way up her leg but for the child it has just passed her ankle.…

In her 2006 article “The Trouble with (the Term) Art”, Carolyn Dean argues that the using the word “art” for both past visual expressions (particularly nonwestern) does not quite capture the true definition of what these pieces are. This argument is valid, to consider these works as mere entertainment erases a culture’s true history and identity. Dean has a very strong argument for the analysis and retirement of the term “art”, however the ideas surrounding the concept of “art” explain the larger issue as a whole. Carolyn Dean argues that pinning the recent idea of “art” on nonwestern works does not inform one about the culture, but rather condenses that culture into easily defined novelties.…

The focal point of the image, ‘Oliver Asking for More,’ is the gentleman standing opposite the other people who are seated. The man attracts the attention at first glance because he looks bigger than the other people in the picture, and his clothes are painted white while the other people have their clothes painted dark. After gazing at the image of the man, my eyes are then attracted to his legs. The legs look bent while he leans on the wall. The attention of the gaze of the legs is based on the eagerness to understand if he naturally has bent legs or the legs appear bent because he is leaning on the wall.…

Being said, I propose that neither an emphasis on its artistic merits nor its historic significance can be fully comprehended without a discussion of the looted objects that are still circulating in the global art scene and constantly triggering diplomatic tension and museological debates. The looted artifacts are physical proofs of Yuan Ming Yuan’s awe-inspiring achievement in the world’s art history, as well as the material manifestation of the power imbalance between China and the western world both in the past and the present. In this sense, the value of these looted artifacts is derived from its power to uncover the collision of political, economic, and cultural power between China and the western world in modern history. Under this value statement, a…

Art class was honestly harder than I thought. I had originally thought that joining an art class for the summer was supposed to be a fun, laid back experience that was supposed to help students who liked art explore their skills and find their strengths and weaknesses in a non-judgemental environment. Instead what I got were 9-14 year olds that scared me because of how tall they were and their skills. Like seriously, they were really talented. Not only that, but I wasn't used to the different medias, such as graphite drawings, pastels, acrylic paint, and carving.…
