The first item I will discuss is the Rwanda genocide in 1994. At this time, the country was split into two groups, by the Belgian’s and were called the Hutu and the Tutsi. There was absolutely no difference between the groups, but since they were separated, they began to identify physical differences to distinguish from one another. Originally, Belgium put the Tutsis in power, but over the 20 years of this they had, the Hutus built up a resentment and took power for themselves. The Hutu were in control of the country in 1994, leaving the Tutsi as …show more content…
There is a lot of inequality within gender and a main reason for this is discrimination. A major issue we face is the gender pay gap. For example, on average, men in full time work will be paid 13.9% more than a woman in full time work. This can make a large impact on the way these people live their lives, it also makes relations between men and women very tense and leads topics like this to be very controversial and highly talked about. Another issue women face is domestic violence; a statistic says that 2 women are killed every week from domestic violence by a current or ex-partner. However, gender inequality isn’t only just faced towards women, it also has concerns for men too. For instance, men are very badly treated in child and family law courts. Race is a social construct which means it’s something within society we have come up with to catagorise people. This has had massive consequences for many people. For example, in World War II, 27 million Russians and 6 million Jews were killed all for the exact same reason, their race. Mary Douglas believes in ‘Body as Text’ meaning we can identify what kind of society or culture someone is from just by looking and reading their behavior and dress. This can have both positive and negative powers. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the slave trade was a large event. People of darker pigmented skin were used as slaves and very poorly treated, being shipped from one place to another, miles away and completely unaware of where their families might be. This was a result of catagorising skin colour and white people saying that they were superior. However, we have no way of choosing our skin colour and it isn’t something that we can change, so what the white people said was completely invalid. This demonstrates that catagorising people is immoral and makes relations across different races and ethnic groups quite difficult. Also, in the past there has been so much controversy about hierarchy and which group is the most superior, although now, modern societies are much more welcoming and accepting of other ethnic groups and their
