America lost most of its jobs in industry and the jobs that remain are more than likely not as well paid as they were in the past. Many American companies hire people from other countries for labor because they are much cheaper to hire than our own citizens and that has definitely hurt our economy. This may be part of the reason that people are so competitive and possessive of jobs when it comes to immigrants (Roemer, pg.620). But is the American dream only for Americans? Roemer mentions that in his travels he met people who
dreamed of living in America (Roemer. pg.618). As long as they come here legally and pay taxes who are we to say they cannot have their own part in the American dream? "We may believe that anyone can succeed through hard work and determination, but the facts say otherwise" (Krugman, pg. 565). Just because someone really wants to immigrate to America and be successful does not mean that they will be able to, there is always someone better and more educated than you, and that someone may even be another
