I would not be able to go out and about with my everyday things if I did not feel safe and sound. I know that at home I am surrounded by parents who love me and will protect me from harm’s way. I know that if I am ever in trouble the police are only a dial away and will come as fast as they can. In addition, I also have a need for self-preservation and I am very aware of my surroundings. I would not work at a job, go to a school, or any place that will threaten my safety. Besides this, I also need to be aware that I am healthy otherwise, I would not feel safe. Maslow classified this into two categories: 1. esteem for oneself and 2. the desire for reputation or respect from others. According to Maslow, the need for respect or reputation is most important for children and adolescents and precedes real self-esteem or dignity. In order for me to have reached this level I needed to achieve the more important basic needs first. Lucky for me, I was nurtured in a safe, and loving environment with parents who supported me in everything. As a result, I was able to build and achieve a high self-esteem.
