According to the world renowned author Ernest Hemingway, a hero is “A man who lives correctly, following the ideals of honor, courage and endurance in a world that is sometimes chaotic, often stressful, and always painful” (Miles). Who is a chaotic and stressful hero in your eyes? Wolverine? Deadpool? These characters relate to Frederic Henry because they are not traditional heroes. An average day in any of these heroes shoes are almost the complete opposite of normal. All of Hemingway’s characters are not traditional heroes; they are Hemingway Heroes. They may not do everything by the book, they may not even do everything for the right reason. But at the end of the day they end up doing what is right. All of these heroes have their own very unique problems, but they are able to push through by displaying grace under pressure. Frederick Henry is not a traditional Hero. Frederick Henry is a Hemingway Hero. The traits that reveal him as one become more lucid throughout the novel. Henry is characterized as a Hemingway Hero because he is able to display grace under pressure in difficult situations. Henry has to constantly battle against the void or nothingness in his life called nada. Henry uses the sensual pleasures in his life to combat against nada. Do you know of any chaotic and stressful heroes? Henry shares plenty of characteristics with non traditional superheroes like Wolverine or Deadpool; whose lives are always upside down. Ernest Hemingway characterizes a hero as someone who is honorable, someone who is courageous, and someone who has tolerance in a sometimes crazy, often taxing, and always unpleasant world.
