Overview Everyone in America talks about the American dream; a big house with a great family and a white picket fence in the yard. For others, the American dream is to never have an empty stomach, it’s a place other than the cold and dirty concrete, it’s where people can shower more than once a week. The American dream isn’t what it’s all cracked up to be for some. There are people that go day after day barely surviving.…

As my team and I consider factors that surround our research topic we have considered the likeliness of being able to access relevant research specific to the areas of homelessness we seek to study. In addition to finding relevant research to support us in our own research, we have also considered who this research could benefit, and if there is a potential of harm imposed on the homeless through the research we would be conducting. We have also considered what best practices in gathering information from our target population would look like, and how to gather information without exploiting our target population. Furthermore, we have considered what this research could ultimately be used for as well as the possibility of better supporting…

Maintaining homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and other such programs to support the homeless are necessary measures, but do little to end homelessness. In Nishio et al.’s Causes of homelessness prevalence, a poll among 114 homeless individuals found approximately half believed their homelessness derived from their unemployment (Nishio et al., 2016). Of course, unemployment is a byproduct of any capitalist economy and is an entirely different problem to tackle. Nevertheless, prospective employers hold potential employees to a certain standard, such as having a residence, a reliable mode of transportation, and testing negative to a drug-test.…

The AZ Central article “Mesa mayor tells conference there are no homeless vets in city”, posted in January 19th, 2017, shows that the main concern for the homeless in Mesa are veterans. I understand that veterans sacrificed a lot to give each and every one of us our freedom, but why should this group be the top priority in the battle against homelessness. According to “Endhomelessness.com” only 8.6% of the total homeless population across the country are veterans (http://www.endhomelessness.org/library/entry/fact-sheet-veteran-homelessness). Why should this small percentage of the homeless be the main focus when there is children and single mothers who are in the same situation: looking for food to eat and a place to sleep? I’m sure that the…

There’s one part of the video 2 that really caught my attention. Society’s ignorance and judgement are creating the wrong perceptions towards the homeless people when the truth behind their situations are far more complex. Vast majority of homeless people are suffering from a mental illness that keeps them from getting a permanent job. Some have very little knowledge about mental health that they don’t seek for help. The reasons of being homeless are not as simple as we think it is.…

Chris’ environment made his journey very hard, his bad mentality did not keep him alive, and his strength was obselete at the end of his journey. None of these things brought out talents in Chris that would have helped his situation. Chris McCandless’ story touched many people, especially the people he met along the way. Having worked in the field of human services for over 20 years, I've encountered people having various barriers that are impact people’s lives due to developmental disability, mental illness and/or substance abuse. While many of the barriers presented are fairly concrete things to address, a significant one, and one that is a bit harder to manage is the lack of understanding and compassion regarding the experience of homelessness. Many of us take our daily activities for granted, like having the opportunity to go home (shelter), take a shower (warm running water), freshen the body (hygiene), and enjoy a healthy meal (food). There are many that are not given the same privilege. There are thousands of people who are homeless, residing on the…

The previous statistics and empirical evidence provided highlights the fact that the issues experienced by Jay, such as of substance use and abuse, homelessness, and depression are not only issues that involves him or the LGBTQ+ community. Rather these high numbers and percentages are indicators that Jay’s issues are very prevalent within our society. The Anxiety and Depression Association of American (ADAA) reported that there were 16.5 million adults, age 18 and over, diagnosed with a type of depression in 2015 (ADAA, 2016). In my opinion, this can be possibly due to the many stressors presented by the capitalist, judgmental, non-conforming and fast paced society/country in which the individual lives. People are too concerned with trying to keep up with meeting expectations (financial, moral,…
