What is Fiber Optic Cables?
Back in the day we used copper wires for our tele-communication and to interconnect throughout the world. However as technology and machines start to grow more powerful, we are forced to put a change in this production of copper wires. The wire density becomes a very critical factor in the modern era, however the limit in size must always result in better performance. Fiber optics proves to be highly effective in its high bandwidth, as it allows on a single fiber to send lots of information/data.

Fiber optics are very lightweight and has a highly effective bandwidth compared to most cables, such as Twisted pair cabling, this is a form of wiring in which pairs of wires are twisted together and sends electrical data. Fiber optics has a higher capacity of sending data and has a lower risk of data transmission loss compared to Twisted pair cabling, where electrical data cannot be reliable due to its poor cladding and …show more content…
They are all simply electromagnetic radiation of different wavelengths. For fiber optics with glass fibers, infrared light is used for fiber optics because it contains wavelengths longer than visble light, which is around 850 to 1150 nm. (As seen on the diagram)

Infrared is used in fiber optics because the amount of data loss of the fiber is much less at infrared wavelengths, loss of data in glass fiber optic cables is caused by two factors, absortion and scattering. Absortion occurs in specific wavelengths called water bands due to the absortion of water in the glass. This is mainly seen in underwater fiber optics. Scattering is caused by light bouncing off atoms or molecules in the glass.

Fiber optic transmittion wavelengths are determined by two factors, longer wavelengths in the infrared for lower loss of data in the glass fiber optic and at wave lengths and at wave lengths which are between the absorption bands. Fortunately, we are able to make transmitters (lasers or LEDS) and recivers at the according wavelengths for the fiber optics.
