Fad diets have invaded our culture. When a celebrity is endorsing it and getting results, then there are more people lining up to do the same. In the past, we have projected that in order to be healthy we have to have a balance of diet and exercise, but we have not articulated this to the fullest extent. Fad diets normally involve little to no exercise, but they do involve starvation by decreasing one’s daily caloric intake. Our culture has scripted this perfectly, because our industry that has persuaded millions of people that in order to lose weight fast one has to follow their program. As Ty Burr said, “As the twenty-first century settles into its second decade, we are more than ever a culture that worships images and shrinks from reality” (32). Our reality of how we should look is a fantasy; we want either be a size zero, have six pack abs, or even look twenty years younger. What makes this dilemma even worse is the fact that we see all these celebrities looking good and then we make it part of our agenda to be that way. Society has set our beliefs now; no more modern day dieting, or exercising. There is an easier way to get that perfect body that we all crave.
