I have been in the nursing field my entire life and have experienced many changes. I have been with my company approximately eight months and change is occurring very frequently, because of the many broken systems and the stagnate environment. One area that needed dramatic change was in the area of wounds and wound management. The new facility I was in, was acquiring wounds like second job and the star rating was directly reflecting that. I needed to perform a radical change to improve the quality of care for my patients. A second order change occurs when fundamental properties or systems are changed (Huber, 2014). First, I needed to identify and analysis exactly what the problem was, consequently within a short time this became evident to me. Through evaluation and talking to the staff they felt the company only cared about money, and not for the patients. It was this lack of consistency from management, therefor there were no performance evaluations in nearly two years. My rationale was simple: walk the talk and if the staff feel like they are important they will start acting important. In addition, I held meetings explaining why and how to inspect, prevent and heal. I inspected what I expected and before long, I did not have to do one on one education and the wounds dramatically declined. Granted the decrease in wounds and early identification did show me progress, but I wanted to be sure I was on the right track and did an in house staff satisfaction survey to evaluate if I was responding to the staff’s needs. By focusing my energy on what is required to create a healthcare atmosphere that encompasses compassion and excellence, in this case inspiring and showing a genuine concern for my staff, I was able to start my journey to excellence in quality care for the patients (McSherry, Pearce, Grimwood, & McSherry,
