Euthanasia comes from Greek language meaning ‘good death’. It is also known as ‘mercy killing’. This is of two types i.e. by doing something (active euthanasia) and by not doing anything (passive euthanasia). Active Euthanasia is a process in which the ill-person is administered with lethal injection thus ultimately leading to death. This is similar to injecting of slow poison inside the body with either their consent (voluntarily) or without their consent when impossible (non-voluntary) or without consent but not sought (involuntarily). Passive Euthanasia is a process in which the afflicted person is deprived of the life-support system like and left to live naturally until death. In this it is the disease that is killing and not the one who withdraws the treatment.

The Roman Catholic Church is against this and considers it as a crime, Protestants take a liberal view in this. In Islam, euthanasia in any form is forbidden. Hindus think that helping a person to get rid of his painful life by curtailing his life term is good, but this interferes with the cycle of death and rebirth. And India being a secular nation i.e. all religions are considered equal by the state. So if law is to be made regarding either legalizing or prohibiting euthanasia, this aspect should also be kept in mind so that sentiments of any religious community are not
