In Plato 's Republic, he gives an example called the Myth of the Cave. It begins with individuals chained in a cave where the only light source is a burning fire which illuminates the walls decorated with statues of animals and objects. A prisoner finds a way to escape from the cave and encounters the bright, sunny outdoor light. Delighted by his experience, the man goes back to the cave to encourage the rest of the prisoners to struggle their way out of the bonds that hold them to the darkness so that they can see the light of the real world. The cave represents the superficial perspective that the world can first be perceived as. However, once one breaks free of the earthly bonds that keep him from seeing the truth, knowledge and freedom can be obtained. In order to perfectly absorb the pure light and freedom that God gives us, we must begin by behaving under good morals and values. In order to prove that behavior influences lifestyle, an idea of what good morals are composed of and how they are interpreted through actions. Proper human behavior is can be defined as actions that support the common good. In other words, the goal Without selflessness motivating people to act, behavior becomes chaotic and evil. Therefore, humans should behave in such a way that benefits everyone around them, even in ways that cannot be foreseen. Those who act out of concern for the well-being of the world and God are living the Gospel 's message. Proper behavior does not simply come on command; it must be persistently practiced with care. After all, humans are not perfect but we are called to grow in God 's holiness so that we may become "perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect." Growing in divine grace is the key to holiness. Our capability to become good and holy lies in the practice of virtues. This is why Fr. Joseph de Finance at the Gregorian University suggested that we should train our minds in the same way that we eat. Our eating habits usually include getting only portions at a time, not trying to consume the entire buffet. Even when we have taken our portion, we divide it into smaller portions so that we can thoroughly digest it. In total we eat large amounts of food only divided by portion and time. Living in the truth is a crucial part of a relationship with Christ. Because of our free will, no one has the power to make us see the truth and decide for us what we believe. This implies that our conscience is equipped to stay intimate with the truth that lives inside of us. For example, words can be very hurtful, especially when they are said to insult degrade us. However, it is up to the victim of the harsh comments whether he or she believes them to be true. The bullies cannot force you to believe the lies they are saying unless you choose to believe them. This awareness of free will and the control that it gives us opens the doors for further closeness with the truth and, ultimately, God.
