Summary: The Importance Of Prenatal Care

Before I could begin to write about what the importance of proper prenatal care is I wanted to figure out what exactly proper prenatal care means. What occurs after conception and prior to birth is prenatal. The steps taken towards a healthy pregnancy, birthing process, and child are all considered in your prenatal care. “The most dramatic and extensive transformation of the entire life span occurs before birth” and just like any other medical development, prenatal care has been through very extensive research (Berger, 2014, pg. 57). According to Laura Thomas’s article “Empowered Women Shape Modern Maternity Care” (2011), not even one hundred years ago, childbirth and prenatal care were dramatically changing. Some infections that I found online include but are not limited to: Bacterial vaginosis (BV), Cytomegalovirus, Listeriosis, Parvovirus B19 (fifth disease), and Toxoplasmosis. The infection that I found the most frightening is Group B strep (GBS). GBS, found in healthy women’s rectum and/or vagina, does not have any obvious symptoms and without the proper care this infection can be fatal for the baby during childbirth. In a womenshealth.gov article about pregnancy it is said …show more content…
If you have GBS, an antibiotic given to you during labor will protect your baby from infection” (Pregnancy, 2010, table 2). Without taking precautions during pregnancy and placing importance in prenatal care, the fate of the mother and baby advance in unawareness and can result in birth defects, miscarriages, preterm labor and sometimes fatality of either or both the mother and infant.
Proper prenatal care can include a number of different things; choosing your care provider, deciding to work during and after pregnancy, diet and exercise, and taking control of or discontinuing unhealthy habits are all critical elements of pregnancy that the mother should consider before her baby is born.
In our society, alcohol use and smoking tobacco are loosely considered the social norm and not immediate health inhibitors; however, they are highly advised to steer clear of during pregnancy. While some physicians advise pregnant women to stay completely away from alcohol, others believe that a glass of red wine is acceptable during the last trimester.
Smoking tobacco as well as alcohol use during pregnancy have been proven to increase the risk for Sudden Infant Death

Alcohol use during pregnancy is a major public health concern and the focus of widespread media concentration (2). Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can lead to negative effects on the baby. Consuming alcohol while pregnant can lead to fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (F.A.S.D.) and fetal alcohol syndrome (F.A.S.). Researchers Kenneth Lyon Jones and David W. Smith first came across F.A.S. in 1973 (2). This discovery led to widespread public awareness and education, informing women to limit the amount of alcohol they consume while pregnant (2).…

Prenatal Diagnosis Prenatal diagnosis contains features relating to the health of both the fetus and the parents [60]. Current methods including the combined test and invasive procedures (amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS)) are being used to screen the fetus for chromosomal abnormalities pose a risk to mother and fetus [61]. In addition to the risk, the rate of abortion related to CVS and amniocentesis is 1.0 to 2.0% [62] and the false positive rate of combined test is 5.0-9.0% [63] and sometimes mothers with healthy fetuses may choose an unnecessary invasive diagnostic tests that lead to spontaneous abortion [64]. Therefore, replacing current invasive tests with Non Invasive Prenatal Diagnosis test (NIPD) would reduce risk and increase detection rate for the three most prevalent aneuploidies; Down’s syndrome (trisomy 21), Edwards’ syndrome (trisomy 18) and Patau’s syndrome (trisomy 13) [61].…

The importance of refraining from any tobacco products during and after pregnancy is crucial in maintaining a healthy baby throughout and after pregnancy. Nicotine passes through the bloodstream of the mother and into the developing fetus causing harm to the fetus (“Birth defects and brain development”). Smoking during pregnancy also causes mother’s blood oxygen content level to drop drastically(“Birth defects and brain development”). When the mother’s oxygen level drops it causes the fetus to receive less oxygen. This can cause damage to the fetus and result in a condition called fetal hypoxia (Birth defects and brain development”).…
