Background
The author argues that three circumstances which are usually have historical implication from a country with a diverse cultures: 1. Present discrimination 2. Historical injustice 3. State establishment of culture. Since its establishment, Indonesia has tried to accommodate multiculturalism through its national motto: Bhineka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity). The phrase has been derived from a book named Sutasoma by Empu Tantular during the era of Majapahit. The authors divide diversity as two things for social cohesion: strengthening or weakening factors. The interview suggested that respondent see diversity as “a concept representing a wide similarities and differences which are not necessarily to be listed” (142).
