It is important to know as both the cosmetologist and the client to know the risks that are in the salon. Accidents happen, people become lazy and try to make it easier on them, then clients or even the cosmetologist could both be affected. Although some diseases that are introduced in the salon are not contagious there are other diseases that are very serious to people’s well being. Skin diseases especially on the hands, affect one in five hairstylists. In fact, skin diseases are the number one occupation-related disease in America. Many chemicals produce symptoms ranging from itchy rash to serious burns or allergies. In the salon, these problems are usually seen on the fingers, hands, wrists, and scalp(John Halal). In cosmetology knowing about skin and nail diseases can keep your salon and clients safe, clean, and disinfected. …show more content…
Impetigo is a contagious bacterial skin infection characterized by weeping lesions, mostly seen in children. Conjunctivitis(pink eye) is a common bacterial infection of the eye, it is extremely contagious. Herpes Simplex is a recurring viral infection that often presents as a fever blister or cold sore. Verruca is a hypertrophy of the papillae and epidermis, it is a virus that can be spread from one location to another. HIV/ AIDS is a disease that breaks down the immune system, it can be spread from person to person through blood or through other bodily fluids. Scabies is caused by the itch mite, which burrows under the skin. Tinea capitis is a fungal infection of the scalp characterized by red papules, or spots, at the opening of the hair follicles. Tinea pedis is the most frequently encountered infection on the foot from nail services, it is a ringworm fungus of the foot.
