Glucagon plays a role in maintaining blood sugar levels just as insulin does. Insulin regulates the blood sugar levels when the body becomes hyperglycemic and glucagon regulates hypoglycemia (Bowen, “Glucagon” ,1999). Glucagon is a direct contradiction for insulin. They don’t necessarily work against each other but they both have opposite functions. The one thing glucagon and insulin have in common is they both work against each other in order to create homeostasis. To do so, insulin is a negative feedback loop (Gual et al., 2005). Diabetes diagnosed individuals are usually prescribed insulin because a majority of the world has diabetes that can’t control …show more content…
Type 2 diabetes is the highest growing type of diabetes around the globe and isn’t decreasing anytime soon. The US has the highest rate of diabetics in the world with about 23.6 million Americans having diabetes already and 79 million having pre-diabetic symptoms. Of those 23.6 million, 90 percent of them are type 2 diabetics (Imus 2011). A study from 2006 showed the US having 21 million diagnosed and 42 million with pre-diabetic symptoms (Daniels 2006). As of now the rate is 1 in 10 adults have diabetes type 2 and in the next 40 years it will most likely become 1 in 3. Obesity is a large contributing factor as to why a majority of the world has type 2 diabetes. The larger body needs more insulin. Managing a healthy diet can significantly decrease chances of diabetes and help regulate blood sugar levels. The fight against diabetes is ongoing and hopefully can be eliminated. As the past few years have shown, insulin has been fighting back as well. Let’s all pitch in and reduce the numbers by maintaining healthy diets. Eventually diabetes will be eliminated and the world will be a healthier
