Are you interested in going into the cosmetology field? The textbook Salon Success is very important to read if you are thinking about it or if you know you want to go into the cosmetology field. The Salon Success textbook sets you up and answers possible questions you could have about the salon environment. This book helps out a lot especially if you are a student. Even if you're already a cosmetologist, you still can benefit a lot from it. Clientele also could benefit from it because they would learn about a salon and then would be able to tell if their salon is doing what it’s supposed to. There are six important chapters throughout the textbook that contain a lot of important details. Chapter one is titled Redefining Character. This chapter …show more content…
The integrity section talks about trust and life choices. Then the commitment section talks about new challenges and staying the course. Finally, it’s respect section that I enjoyed the most. It talks about self-respect, mutual respect and self-esteem. To respect something is to accept it and of course everyone wants to be accepted. Self respect is being able to see yourself in a positive way. An example used for self respect is “I like myself. I have qualities and personal traits that I respect in myself and others, such as strength of character, integrity, dedication, generosity and steadfastness” (5). Mutual respect is a vital key to success in your career and personal life. However, you need to have self respect first. An example of mutual respect is “I have the confidence to live authentically and to recognize and appreciate the positive qualities of others. I demonstrate my respect for others and others respect me in return (5).” Self-esteem is something you need to have in a salon environment. You want to feel competent that you can live a productive and meaningful life. An example of self-esteem is “I believe in myself and my ability to make my way in this world” (5). I liked the respect unit …show more content…
In this chapter, section one talks about communication basics. It includes body language, speaking, and listening. I really enjoyed reading about listening. Listening is something I feel a lot of people lack, and it’s really important. Reality is, listening is just as important to communication as speaking. The book states that “Many people think that listening is easy especially easier than speaking but this is not true” (87). To listen, you don’t just sit there quietly. You need to know how to focus your attention to what the speaker is saying. In Cosmetology, we are always working with clients and we need to do a lot of listening, so I found this very helpful. I really liked it because it’s something that’s often overlooked. Another section talked about in this chapter is professional communication. In this section it discusses professional etiquette and communication challenges. From this section I really liked reading the communication challenges. In a salon, as in most places, interpersonal conflicts can happen at any time. A salon is a highly personalized environment with creative, energetic staff and highly diverse clientele. When people are stressed, distracted, pressed for time or faced with something unexpected, it’s not unusual for conflicts to arise. The chart provided in this section is very helpful. It explains details about general guidelines for handling communication challenges. The guidelines include “stay in

For example, respect between a supportive teacher and a proactive student often occurs. Respect also demands a high esteem gained through specific instances. I have felt so confused and overwhelmed not knowing what I am going to do with the rest of my life. If someone has not already thought of this, they most likely will because the majority of people have to have serious questions based upon what they want to make a career out of. However, some people have always known what they feel passionate about and can make a career out of. Ever since I was young, I have always loved houses from interior to exterior and even structurally with floor plans. In third grade, I decided I wanted to be an interior designer and it was not until last year, my junior year in high school, that I figured out it would not be the best job field for me.…

Interpersonal communication is the process of sending and receiving information between two or more people. It is a person-to-person contact, it includes everyday exchange that may be formal or informal and can take place anywhere by means of words, sounds, facial expression, gestures and postures. Two significant learning points for me during this course was in module 3, using the I-language instead of you-language which gives power over our thoughts, feelings and emotions to others. To take responsibility for your own feelings, rely on I language rather than you language. I language owns thoughts and feelings and does not blame them on others (Wood 125).…
