Countless of misconceptions have arisen over artists. There’s countless of negative connotations that follows artists, for example eccentric, disheveled, starving and introverted. Intermixed in these stereotypes is the most common self-tortured artist who sees the world as godforsaken where they are misunderstood and self-deprived of emotional expression. There’s the free-spirit who admonishes auras and visions everywhere driven solely by passion. Another common one is the belief that artists must me high all the time in order to work. Nothing in this list fits into the description that is me. One my character is bubbly and overly optimistic, two I rarely go around places like an exorcist trying to see deep into someone’s soul and three I never ever smoked in my life. Theses stereotypes are just a misconception driven through mass media. There’s different types of artists with different characteristics. People tend to assume and neglect the facts. Just the other day two of my underclassmen asked me how I was doing as an Art major without knowing that in reality I am a psychology major. These erroneous assumptions that people who excel at something should pursue it as a career has followed me my whole life. I love art and I love being part of the community, but there’s more in me than spurs of creation. People can’t help but to categorize things and people as they disregard facts and evidence while they just assume.
