Nobody has time to stop and meet a new person. This is also because sites such as Instagram are growing every day. Users do not want to be exposed to every single person in the world, which is why they make private accounts and accept the people they know. This cuts off the way to meet a new “friend” over social media. The most common way of communicating over the internet used to be phone calls, but it is now texting or other social media chats. Phone calls are meaningful because although two people aren’t together, they are having a thought out conversation and can share emotion. Phone calls are rarely used for daily conversations anymore because texting is easier and faster. Texting takes all emotion, honesty, and meaning out of a conversation. It is argued that social media gives users a way to connect with many more people than they do in real life. ¨Online Americans tend to have 664 ties on average, compared with an offline average of around 506. Some people believe that it is completely possible to make good friends on the internet. They say that a person can be whoever they want on social media, or just be themselves, which allows them to practice their social skills. However, this does the exact opposite of helping social skills. If a person is acting like somebody that is not truly them, they are making it impossible to be comfortable with their real personality in the real world. Even if they are being themselves, there is no good social practice about spending large amounts of time on social media. Good social skills are having real life conversations with other people. In conclusion, a genuine friendship can not be made over the internet. A meaningful conversation can not be made over social media. Besides, it is extremely dangerous to build relationships over the internet with people that may or may not be real. If people continue building these internet “friendships”, social skills will greatly decrease and more people will be in danger of hidden identities on the
