Fekadu: The Role Of Characterization In Literature

The word character has two meanings, it can refer to a person in a work of fiction or their characterization. Characterization is the process of how the author presents the character to make them seem real to the reader. Characters are an important element in short stories, books or graphic novels, because characters drive the story as a whole. The types of characters that are included in a story make the story flow. They also create different types of tensions and conflicts, as well as different types of resolutions. In a book or story, there is one or two characters that are typically the central focus of the story. They are the main characters, meaning the story usually revolves around them. William is the major character, the story revolves around him and his choices, but that wasn’t all William, Fekadu a taxi driver from Ethiopia helped William. Fekadu was written as a major, static and round character. When William met Fekadu. “Let me take your bags, sir,” said the taxi driver. “What?” asked William, momentarily confused. “Your bags, sir.” (59) The readers could see that he was a kind man, and wanted to help, later on Fekadu starts explaining his past to William. Fekadu says a long story about how he flew away from home, to keep his family safe and that he could never return home. William realizes that Fekadu is alone and could never see his kids and wife again, this makes William see that he could. Fekadu is static because he doesn't really change throughout the story, he is just explaining his past to William. Although he is static, he was a round character as well, because his actions or what he said weren’t very predictable.
