Changing lunch Programs

Even though changing the lunch program is more expensive, schools should have it because it helps nutritional wise and it’s beneficial to the kids at school. A lot of families need school lunches because that’s their main food source. Many schools that are participating in the lunch programs have seen in increase in nutrition. There has been in increase in whole grains, low fat options, and in fruits and vegetables. Many kids especially from low income families, they need school meals because it may be their only energy intake for the day and it’s free. Many people disagree with the new lunch programs. Parents feel it leaves their kids feeling tired and like they haven’t eaten enough. One reason schools have been dropping the program is because it costs too much. Many schools don’t have enough kids to participate in the lunch programs. Therefor they don’t have enough money to get it. Many schools also believe if they were to drop their original program they would be losing money. Research shows that there may not be enough time for kids to actually eat healthy food. Kids with twenty minutes or less to eat, ate thirteen percent entrees and ten percent less vegetables. So maybe the problem is that there isn’t enough time to consume their food.

One student says “Usually we go to the student store and I'll buy a bag of Cheetos...or like chips, sometimes a Gatorade, yeah" when asked what they will do when the school lunch doesn’t fill them up enough. This is a problem that is hard to deal with, because having bags of snacks that students can munch on sort of goes back on the whole idea of “healthy lunches” and has the student spending money on top of their bought lunch just to get filled up for the rest of the day. Giving students a healthy option is ideal, but having them eat something that tastes bad and won’t even fill them up doesn’t seem right. There are some arguments that some people can make as to why healthy school lunches are extremely important and why they mustn’t change.…
