In the very controversial topic of evolution and creationism there are times when both are censored and not taught in the class room, and other times when one may be left out of the classroom discussion. Evolution is “the process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and diversified from earlier forms during the history of the earth” (“Evolution”). In contrast creationism is “the belief that the universe and living organisms originate from specific acts of divine creation, as in the biblical account, rather than by natural processes such as evolution” (“Creationism”). These ideas are both widely controversial for obvious reasons, evolution assumes there is no God because the universe began with a big bang and bacteria that evolved into life; meanwhile creationism is based off the idea that God had a hand in life and the creation of the Earth. Evolution is a widely accepted theory that has captured the mind of scientists and students alike. Regardless of how accepted it is in the world of science, it still teaches that there is an absence of a higher power, something that millions of school kids believe in. Although God is not a proven being, people still believe in him and the bibles account of the creation of the world. School is a safe place for many students and they go to school for a comfortable learning environment to learn basic knowledge. Censorship provides students a sense of security about what they are being taught. Censorship tends to eliminate awkward topics; as an example, there are many schools in the southern United States that have banned Huckleberry Finn and To Kill a Mockingbird because some students felt uneasy and uncomfortable reading it, regardless of their race. However, this is hypocritical because of the society and entertainment with which they surround themselves. Those students will not read about incredible feats of eliminating racism, however they will listen to music that says the N word in a derogatory way and speaks negatively about both races without even thinking
