“I don’t care” is usually the response I get after asking someone who they are going to vote for President of the United States. The majority of people even divulge that they are not even registered voters! It seems that the majority of people really do not care about the government that runs this country or even have any interest in what goes on in the politics of this nation. These people feel as though it will not affect them in any way, and that there really isn’t much for them, or any one person, can do anyways. Well, they are wrong. The government has many different levels and sublevels and affects our lives a great deal more than we think.

First, we have the federal government which includes the three branches and is granted certain powers by the constitution, and is usually superior to the other levels. Next, we have state governments. “Each of the 50 states has its own array of public officials, with no two states being exactly alike.” (State and Local Governments, 2015) This is due in part to the fact that every state has its own constitution. States also have their own officials such as Governors, state legislatures and state courts. The governor is elected by the citizens of the state, and so are the state legislatures. The state courts are also very important, because most cases fall under state jurisdiction before the make it to a federal level or even to the Supreme Court. Finally, taking a step down to local government. You can break down all of the states into either counties, townships, districts, or municipalities. As we all know the countries national debt and national spending is climbing at an unbelievable rate as we speak, and I feel there are some things the government can do to try and cut down on national spending. For example, government aid, food stamps, EBT, WIC. All of these programs are in place for a very good reason and I know they are very important to the less fortunate of this country and in no way do I think we should stop funding this, but I do feel that the government should place more strict guidelines as to who is actually allowed to receive government benefits. About 48 percent of the U.S. population is receiving some form of government welfare. (The 35.4 Percent, 2015) myself personally, I know plenty of people who do and to my knowledge most of them don’t need it at all. They are merely taking advantage of the loose guidelines as to who can receive money from the government and reaping the benefits. I feel that this unfair to the people who really do need this money for their families and loved ones, and something should be done in order to ensure that that money is getting to the people who actually need
