I found myself interested in this topic because I myself am a C-section baby; so is my mother. I also know quite a few people who were C-sections. Prior to my study, I believed assumed that C-sections were only performed in serious cases, that’s what happened with my mother and me. I was an enormous baby and was a “failure to descend” which means I wasn’t coming out, my mom --- I didn’t think C-sections could just, happen. However after researching, I observed that the amount of C-sections is quite unnecessary. The amount of C-sections has risen significantly in the past 20 years. It has risen 53% since 1996
FACTORS CAUSING THE RISE
Doctors are getting sued One of the main reasons C-sections have risen so much is because of doctors. Doctors scared of something going wrong during birth end up opting to perform a C-section. This is because obstetricians can get sued for a lot of money. If the slightest irregularity is shown, doctors can interpret that that baby is in distress and opt for a C-section. "The increased level of fetal surveillance has led to increased rates of intrapartum cesarean delivery for presumed abnormalities in fetal status, but the use of electronic monitoring has not been shown to improve the overall rate of perinatal mortality or cerebral palsy...," according to The Journal of the American Medical Association. This means that we continue to cling to fetal heart monitoring machines when it shows no clear improvement in outcomes of pregnancy, it has become a standard of care for labor.
