Consider a small boy or girl in middle childhood, who was badly burned in a house fire one evening. During this, he or she suffered horrible burns on 75% of his or her body. The majority cannot fathom going through such an ordeal as a child. This child would be a classmate and a friend who did not show up to school one day and would not return for approximately a year. This message and the unimaginable scenario must be conveyed to the stakeholders.
The child would suffer far greater long term effects if he or she were not able to have some sense of normalcy such as in a hospital play area. No parent would want the recovery period during an extended stay in the hospital to be his or her child’s only memory. As a child moves into adolescence and early adulthood and draws on autobiographic memories, the positive memories of learning and development a child would receive during visits to the paly ward may have lasting positive effects on the child (Feldman, 2014). A child’s transition back to the real world after released from the hospital may be smoother if a routine of play and developmental activities were practiced during his or her recovery
