So, meeting new people for the first time was a little difficult for me. When it came to family events I always dreaded them because random family members always come up to you saying “Oh my gosh! I haven’t seen you since you were a baby (you were a kid).” It’s quite annoying, but it's a normal reaction for most people. Like Santiago said in his paper about him being the odd one out because of his hair and eye color being different than his family and they would call him gϋerito. I felt the separation from others in 7th grade when I was at a sleepover with one of my best friends and a few others. It started out as a normal sleepover; we all sat on a bed with blankets on the floor and ordered pizza to be delivered, I was having fun. But as the night continued my friend slowly started conversing with the others more than me. They spoke about private matters to such a degree that it was code words as if they did not want me included. I felt like I didn’t belong there, and it made me feel distressed and questioning whether I should even be there at all.…

“A group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.” That is the definition of the word community. The Outsiders, a novel by S.E. Hinton, was based on a setting of a divided community consisting of the Socs, the rich Westside kids, and the Greasers, the poorer Eastside kids, usually deemed for trouble. The problem: they can’t put their differences aside, and realize they are both human. They just can’t crack the code on equality.…

Growing up, I have always been the outsider or someone who observes others doing things. I would gaze near people's directions and their amazing qualities. Whether that individual had a talent or was outgoing, I would be in awe. Sometimes I would feel a tinge of jealousy because I wanted to be one of those people who are productive, active in their community, and talented. Overall, I just wanted to be someone who was confident and talented.…

Reno begins the discussion of Stranger in a Strange Land by explaining how Heinlein was able to develop the material for the novel through the already present concepts in the 1950s. However, not only does Heinlein use the 1950’s social culture as inspiration for sexual exploitation of female characters, but Heinlein also uses inspiration from the Whorfian hypothesis in order to develop Smith’s Martian background. Reno states that the Whorfian hypothesis is the basic idea that people see the world personally because of each person’s difference in language and background. For example, in Stranger in a Strange Land, the character of Mahmond, as Reno mentions, has a different way of thinking due to having grown up already knowing a foreign language…

The title “The Outsiders” in itself describes the overall them of the story, as the characters involved feel as outsiders in society. When one looks at life as an outsider and feels as though one is being treated as an outsider, creates a perspective that makes one feel that life is unfair. During the dramatic and deeply confusing time of adolescence in life, teenagers often consider themselves to know the way of the world, yet find themselves still under the control of others, which creates tension and disillusion with society. Authority figures such as teachers and parents telling them how to live their lives creates a feeling of powerlessness. This loss of control inevitably leads to the feeling that life is unjust.…

To me Jhumpa Lahiri’s story about her struggle to mingle into American society, coming from an Indian background, is very much similar. To really experience and to get know what she felt like one should really have been through that and been to places where no one is concerned about your existence. Well, if you ask me, I have been through it many times and every time I got into that situation, it felt like I was doomed and was on the cusp of choking myself for some reason. I bet, growing up, everyone has witnessed something like this at least once. It is really hard especially if you’re an outsider because people often tend to alienate you.…

Whatever it is, culture is everywhere and it is what makes every person unique and original. When people begin to go outside of their culture into new and foreign lands, they often times find themselves feeling awkward because they are unsure of the culture around them.
