Reflective Essay: A Career In Photography

The people who are always bored are the people who are boring. I remember being told something along these lines, that the nature of one’s surroundings depends on what they make of them, and this ultimately reflects who they are. In order to constantly live in an interesting world and even be an interesting person, people adapt a “creative eye.” Having such, they are able to find new treasures in otherwise depleted or barren scenes. This filtered, idealistic vision of the world has been especially relevant to photography. While a photograph is easy to take, what “separates the amateur from the professional” (Bess, 13 Sep.) is the technique of the photographer. It is not the tool that creates a stunning image, but the skill-set a person has acquired and uses to lure out the most beautiful aspects of what they visually preserve. This approach, commonly referred to as creativity, is not necessarily an inherited trait, though natural talent aids in its development. My writing has relied on having a multifaceted view of the world to capture as many opposing arguments as can be fitted onto four pages. I have utilized the idea of reinventing tools in my approach to history, connecting and evolving key points from past lectures to make sense of current ones. Rather than succumb to bland formats or base my knowledge off of memorizing facts, the vision I have adopted seeks to make more out of what I encounter.
