Introduction
In my development process as a counsellor, my lecturers, colleagues, and literature have emphasized the importance of the therapeutic alliance. Although there are many different counselling theories, the concept of the therapeutic alliance has been highlighted with utmost importance within the counselling process (Horvath & Luborsky, 1993; McGuire, McCabe, & Priebe, 2001). It is a collaborative relationship between a client and a therapist that consists of an emotional bond and a shared idea relating to the tasks and goals of counselling treatment. Testing is defined as collecting information to analyze and evaluate a client in order to identify problems, plan for treatment, and aid in diagnosing. Tests usually take the form of paper and pencil, for children observation through play. Other types of testing focus on therapy and counseling. Here the testing may focus on personality traits, levels of functioning, and diagnosing.
Counselling Experience
Many people will, at some point in their lives, find themselves in the role of a counsellor without having a true understanding of the concept of counselling or what the role of the professional counsellor entails. There is a big difference between a professional counsellor and a person who uses some counselling skills as part of their role, for example their role as a friend or colleague. A professional counsellor is a highly trained individual who is able to use a different range of counselling approaches with their clients.
Professor Samm -Vaughn was very relaxed and also watches the client even when you don’t notice her. And she will make comment on what was doing and make corrections. She makes the counselling process look effortless. She was very professional in the way she spoke to her clients. My experience during these sessions taught me many things that will help me to be a better counsellor. Not only did I learn specific technique and lessons, but I was able to experience different developmental stages that exist in an individual from birth to adulthood. Last but not least, I experience the importance of having good relationship with staff they have great team spirit which helps to make their job easier. And that the services they offer bring energy and encouragement to the people they see on a day to day basic. This experience definitely confirms my desire to become a professional counselor. “If you have a dream, don’t just sit there. Gather courage to believe that you can succeed and leave no stone unturned to make it a reality
