The following paper is a community assessment of Bono Arkansas. Bono is located in Northeast Arkansas along Highway 63 bypass within Craighead County and has an area of 1.4 square miles. The town was founded in the late 1800’s by Alfred Bonner. The name Bono was actually chosen by a contest after the US postal service refused to issue a postal service permit with the original name of Bonnerville, as it was easily confused with Booneville (The encyclopedia of Arkansas history and culture, 2012). According to one long term resident, Bono was a social hub for rail and sawmill workers in the early beginnings, this according to stories past down from his grandfather.
Community Description
Upon entering into Bono city limits from 63 highway the railway tracks are distinct and run along the edge of town. The environment around the base of the community is primarily residential single family homes. There are scattered multifamily apartment and an area of section 8 apartments for low income residents. Most single family homes are arranged in neighborhood fashion with inlets and outlets of roadways. The streets are quaint with sectioned off homes of newer builds and areas of older homes. Life expectancy in Craighead County in 76.1 years (Arkansas life expectancy at birth. Based on 2008-2010 death data and 2009 population expectancy. (2013). Bono population’s health is subject to the effects of the surrounding areas. Agriculture, chemicals, and construction are all intertwined within Bono and have a systematic effect on each person’s health.
