Pursuing A Career In Computer Science

Many people do not realize what exactly computer science is or what the people who choose this as a career path actually do on a day to day basis. Many think that those who deal with computers just sit and play games or sit and endlessly input data into a computer. However, this is not the case, there is a scientific part of computer science that gives individuals freedom to be creative and learn about new and exciting developments in the computerized world. There are many career opportunities in computer science and if a person is considering this but is unsure of its future they should investigate further.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Employment of software developers is projected to grow 17 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. Employment of applications developers is projected to grow 19 percent, and employment of systems developers is projected to grow 13 percent. The main reason for the rapid growth in both applications developers and system developers is a large increase in the demand for computer software” (Bureau of Labor Statistics). People have to realize that computers are everywhere in our society. They are in automobiles, industries, government, healthcare, education and video games, so one must think that this would be one of the preferred career choices (Rosenberg). Also these studies show that many people are lacking previous schooling in computer science or have just been misinformed. I decided to perform my own interview with my mother Katie Summers about her thoughts on a computer science career choice. I chose my mother because she has an Associate Degree in Computer Information Services and also she currently holds an Associate Degree in Nursing. I asked her the following questions: 1. Did you have many computer classes in high school? 2. Do you think computer science is a good career choice? 3. What made you decide to pursue a degree in computers? My mother responded that “she did not have hardly any computer classes in school maybe one and that a computer science career is a good choice because of how everything today is all about technology. I chose computer science as my first career choice for that very reason, computer technology was on the rise and still is. The only reason I decided to change my career path was due to the fact I wasn’t willing to move away from my family to pursue a career in computers, the really good jobs at the time were in big cities not small towns” (Summers). Even though I did not have previous schooling in this subject, I have always been interested in computers, whether it be gaming or just simply building my own computer system.
