The Impact Of Technology On The Marine Corps

A contemporary social issue currently face today that will have an impact on the Marine Corps in 15-20 years is the utilization of technology. Modern technology such as computers and personal hand held devices have its advantage and disadvantages. Computers are able to speed up communications, procedures, and save lives with the use of robots to disarm an improvised explosive device. With the advantages that it brings to the fight, it also has its drawbacks. Technology can take away from important life skills, degrade human interaction, and compromise the Marine Corps security posture.

Marines assigned to different units come from different parts of the world. Marines that come from places that have local stores, congested traffic, or a nearby metropolitan transportation makes getting a driver’s license irrelevant; which is an important life skill to obtain. With technology right at a person’s fingertips it degrades human interactions. At work, emails that are time sensitive end up falling on deaf ears if not followed through. Messages via emails could be misconstrued as harsh and abrupt with out the establishment of human sincere interaction. This could lead to a mismanagement or interpersonal relationship, thus counter productive on the mission. With a personal hand held device, such as a smart phone, Marines find themselves glued to their electronics with no disregard to their surroundings. This will be an issue in the future for leaders as they encounter decrease in work productivity, safety, health, leadership development, and security.
