These reasons are age, and if they had taken a sociology class before. I asked a lot of students who weren’t in college yet. This can explain how they were confused by the questions, because they had never taken a class before. Although, I did notice with one individual who took the class, was confused by the age bracket question. The older individuals in their 40s understood all the questions, and were the closest to the original definition. This is mainly because they have taken a class before, and have more knowledge. I observed during our interactions that if they didn’t understand the question they were expecting me to tell them what I was asking. I found myself during the experiment wanting to explain it better to them. Although, I wasn’t able to tell them what I was asking.This made the experiment accurate. The first element would be symbols. Symbols means, “anything that carries a particular meaning recognized by people who share a culture” (Macionis, 2015, p.52). Some symbols that represent our culture would be the American flag, the Statue of Liberty. These symbols stand for our freedom. Another element of culture that is important to me is values and beliefs. Beliefs are what people believe to be true (Macionis, 2015). Values are what people decide is good for social living (Macionis, 2015). Some values that are strong in our culture are equal opportunities, freedom, and achievement. There are also several different beliefs and religions in America. Personally, I believe these are the most important elements of culture. I think this because our world is full of different symbols that don’t mean the same in other countries. For example we shake hands, and say hello for greeting. While in France, they will give you a kiss on the cheek. Our beliefs and values and also the most important because it’s what our country stands for. America is very strong on equality, and freedom.
