Struggle in Billy Elliot Imagine a boy who has a passion. He loves to do ballet. In fact, he’s amazing at it. His ballet teacher and peers praise him and thinks he’s amazing. Every time he dances it’s like he’s floating through the clouds. He’s practicing his ballet one day and his dad comes in and screams at him for following his dream. Inferring that he’s gay for doing ballet. Having power over him telling him he can’t follow his dream. The movie Billy Elliot explores these ideas of struggles within yourself and how your decisions effect the people around you. Homophobia is a big idea explored in the movie. A scene that shows this is the one where Billy and Mike are dancing in the boxing gym together. Mike is in a tutu and Billy is teaching him how to do ballet. The coach comes in and sees them dancing and immediately goes to tell Billy’s dad. The dad walks into the gym and starts to get angry seeing his son doing what he was doing. The anger then turns into disappointment. Before anyone says anything, Billy starts to do a dance routine for his dad. The routine is amazing and when he’s done his dad runs out of the gym to go ask Mrs. Wilkinson what it will take to get Billy to audition for that prestigious ballet school. He goes against his morals and goes to work at the mines to get the money to let Billy audition. This scene shows the how everyone can take over their own lives and break away from the judgment and power people have over them. He showed his father that he is great at doing what he loves and shouldn’t be shunned for it. He didn’t care what anyone though of him and followed his passion and it paid off so well. It shows that anyone can break away from the hate and scrutiny they get for being different. So many people are scared to follow their dreams because it might be weird to other people. Everybody’s got dreams, they shouldn’t be afraid to follow
