Solipsism is the theory that the external world only exists through consciousness. This gives the Party the advantage to alter the truth. Since they can change the past, nothing in the present is fully real; therefore, reality only exists inside someone’s head.

If they knew that they were being starved, they would rebel. Since facts are constantly being changed to match the present, they do not know what the truth is. Not knowing the truth keeps all of Oceania happy and strong. It gives the Party strength, too; they know that they will never be overthrown unless the truth leaks out. The problem with that is people are too ignorant to realize what the truth really is.
Tragedy is impossible in 1984 because the Party has taken away all emotions that a person feels. Since they do not feel happiness, they cannot feel depressed. Nobody has the desire to take their life, unless they have committed a thoughtcrime. If a loved one dies or is vaporized, nobody is filled with grief and realizes what a tragedy it is to lose someone. With no emotions, people rely solely on the Party for how they should be feeling.
