The critically acclaimed low budget movie about a bomb disposing team The Hurt Locker was released in 2008. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, the first women to win an Academy Award for best director. The Film was nominated 94 times and won 132 awards. Though she is a women people say that she “…is a man’s director who happens to be a woman”. . Jeremy Renner stated that Kathryn was more masculine than most directors. Being diverse in her directions, she directed Point Break a heist movie, and Near Dark a teenage vampire love story (Corliss). The Hurt Locker the lowest grossing movie to win an Oscar for best picture. The movie brought in 14.7 million dollars in box office sales when it released. Compared to the 2 billion Avatar brought in the same year. Sales boosted once the film won an Oscar, it nearly doubled. The film was praised for its episodic format "Ms. Bigelow, practicing a kind of hyperbolic realism, distills the psychological essence and moral complications of modern warfare into a series of brilliant, agonizing set pieces" (Cunningham). Peter Rainer a film critic says it is “Unlike most war movies”. The Hurt Locker focuses on just a few soldiers. In most war movies the focus is on a broad group of people, helping this movie keep originality. He notes that the movie was impeccably done. It shows the random death reality in the streets of 2004 Baghdad. He says that Boal’s taut script was never “lapses into hollywoodese” with its amazing ear for military language. He glorifies Renner’s performance and says he is not as glamorized as most classic Hollywood westerner (Rainer). The critic Richard Alleva says the “three leads couldn’t be any better”. Saying if this movie makes anyone a star it surely would be Jeremy Renner for his brilliant performance. Veterans says that it’s a “sensationalized portrayal of soldiers who disarm bombs”.
