According to David Simon, creator of The Wire states, “The war on drugs is like the holocaust in slow motion”. This quote means, that drug causes destruction at the same rate of mass incarceration that have places children to live without their parents and parents without their children. It has been estimated that America holds 25% of people in the federal prison system. Sadly, people who are placed in the criminal justice system are not all criminals this magnification of problems tend to affect everyone such as their loved one, economy, and the community. In addition, most of the prison population are made up of drug addicts. The concept of power then becomes important to explore as one has to wonder why are laws not in place that will encourage law enforcement officials to have a better approach to addicts. From a social work perspective, this is a profound human rights issue that the America drug policy is lacking as they have no policies implemented that treats addicts instead they punished and criminalized them.
