Although the Holocaust was devastating and six million innocent people were killed, the Soviet Famine was by far worse than the Holocaust, killing an estimated seven million people. Even though the total death count is unknown, everyone can realize that the Holocaust was just one of the many terrible genocides in history. “By the spring of 1933, the height of the famine, an estimated 25,000 persons died every day in the Ukraine” (“Genocide in the 20th Century: Stalin’s Forced Famine 1932-33” ). The Soviet Famine only lasted for a year, compared the Holocaust which is estimated to have lasted for six and a half years. Considering that this particular famine started in 1932, the fact that by the spring of the next year around 25,000 people were dying each day is shocking to the reader. Through the duration of the one year that the famine lasted nearly seven times the number of people died compared to the six and a half year duration of the Holocaust, making the Soviet Famine a more tragic genocide than the Holocaust. The Soviet Famine was so tragic that everyone will only know that an estimated seven million people perished. “No one will ever know for sure how many died” (Trueman).
