DNA had been known to the the scientific community since 1869 but was not considered to carry any sort of genetic material. In 1952 there was a buzz in the scientific community about what proteins actually were for. This would lead to the Hershey - Chase Experiment. It would not go on to prove that DNA was what carried our genes, however it would be influential in changing many minds of the scientific community. Others would demonstrate their findings in different experiment years after through experiments such as the Stahl experiment in 1958.
