Take yourself back to 1963 in Jackson Mississippi; you are right in the middle of the civil rights movement. The movie The Help (Taylor 2011) is an enlightening film depicting a group of women who are deprived of simple luxuries because of the color of their skin. There are many examples of: Modern Racism, Outgroups, System Justification Model, and Social Categorization in this movie. Most of us would say if I lived in that era I wouldn’t stand by and do nothing while these people are treated the way they were I would do something. But in all honesty how many us actually would?
Modern Racism Modern racism is defined as form of prejudice that surfaces in subtle ways when it is safe, socially acceptable and easy to rationalize (Social Psychology Hassin 2014). Seeing as the time frame this movie is set in there are several examples this but the one that stood out to me the most is the Daughters of the Revolution Luncheon when Charlotte fires the maid that has been with them for 29 years because her daughter Lulabelle refuses to use the back door in the kitchen and enters the house using the common door. This was made evident by lumping all black people together. During this time there were laws like; Books should not be interchangeable between whites and blacks and must be used by the race it was started with, or No black barber may cut the hair of women or girls. Said several times all blacks are thieves or they are lazy that’s why they clean for us. This was seen evident as Minny getting fired because she was accused of using her boss’ toilet. It was quiet all right to tell everyone anything you wanted to make your point and was
