Introduction
Diabetes mellitus describes a group of metabolic diseases characterized by elevated blood glucose or hyperglycemia. High levels in glucose levels can lead to significant morbidity and premature mortality. Diabetes is considered as seventh leading cause of death in the United States. At present, about 171 million people in the world have been diagnosed with Diabetes, and it is estimated that the number is going to be double by the year 2030. In the U.S. alone, the number of people diagnosed with diabetes has risen from 1.5 million in 1958 to 25.8 million in 2011. Some of the social factors that affect diabetes include childhood development, education and housing status, food pattern in childhood and as a young adult, lifestyle and financial status. Some of the health factors can be genetic, health behaviors can contribute toward diabetes (Fox, 2013). It is crucial to know about the various health and social determinants that contribute toward diabetes. Many type 2 diabetes interventions focus on symptoms, diet, and activity. Chronic stress can lead to anxiety and depression and can lead to overeating, alcohol, and tobacco consumption (Fox, 2013). Childhood obesity can also lead to metabolic changes in adulthood (Berg, 2004). Family genetics plays a big part when it comes to size, shape, and weight. Genetic factors such as endocrine function, fat storage, and metabolism play a big part in type 2 diabetes (Berg, 2004).Environmental factors such as oversized portions, sedentary living, carbonated soft drinks, and highly processed foods in teenage years can contribute to type 2 …show more content…
The ongoing global and Regional activities include the following :
• Every year on November 14th it is observed as World Diabetes Day,in order to raise awareness on different aspects of diabetes and its complications.
• Many regions joined as partners along with WHO and IDF,in order to address this issue jointly with each region.
• There are different conferences, cogress meets and workshops are held to review the progress and plan further implementation for prevention and effective healthcare.
• There are numerous activities on Diabetes Action Now
