The Code contains advice on terminology, packaging, labelling, placarding, markings, stowage, segregation, handling, and emergency response. The HNS Convention covers hazardous and noxious substances that are included in the IMDG code.
The Code lays down basic principles; detailed recommendations for individual substances, materials and articles, and a number of recommendations for good operational practice including advice on terminology, packing, labelling, stowage, segregation and handling, and emergency response action. 
The two-volume Code is divided into seven parts:
• Volume 1 contains: o general provisions, definitions, training o classification o packing and tank provisions o consignment procedures o construction and testing of packagings,
