The Greek Goddess: Demeter

Decent Essays
Demeter is a Greek goddess that is most widely known as the goddess of crops, but she is also the goddess of marriage, childbirth, and vegetation(grain especially). She is the mother of Persephone. Her parents are Cronus and Rhea. She is the sister of Zeus, Hera, Hades, Hestia, and Poseidon. Demeter is also known by her Roman name, Ceres. Demeter was in charge of growing the crops for everyone. Her myth is to explain the seasons and the pattern of crop growth. There are several different versions, but this one is my favorite. One day as Demeter was taking care of her crops, her daughter, Persephone was taken away by Hades, the god of the dead. She searched desperately for her daughter until the sun god, Helios, told her what had happened. Demeter

In the information given by Apollodorus, he refers to Demeter as Demeter, whereas Ovid refers to her as Ceres. Ovid says “Ceres first turned the earth with the curved plough; she first gave corn and crops to bless the land; she first gave laws; all things are Ceres’ gift” (Ovid, 109). In Ovid’s account of the Rape of Persephone, he adds information about Cupid, Hades, Persephone, and introduces a nymph named Cyane. However, although he does add information he also subtracts information given in Apollodorus’ Library. In Apollodorus’ Library Demeter learns from the people of Hermion that Persephone has been kidnapped.…

To be associated with her a drastic change in environment is usually what occurs. Persephone was tricked and taken to the awful depths of the underworld by Hades. An example of this occurrence is present in Wuthering Heights, where Catherine is lured into obtaining a life with Edgar with promises of higher status and greater wealth, but what she finds at Thrushcross Grange is misery in herself and others around her. There are allusions to her outside the world of literature and in daily life as well, since she is associated with nature a soil fertilizer is named after her, Demeter Fertilizer.…

In Hymn to Demeter, Demeter puts up a fight to against numerous gods, she even directly rejects the order of Zeus. After what she heard from Helios, the only god who watches over both gods and mortals, she “avoided the assembly of gods and lofty Olympus” (Hymn to Demeter, 92). One might argue that she does more avoiding than defying the gods’ will. However, she puts up a tremendous fight with the gods in Olympus at the end of Hymn to Demeter. Gaius, a young boy, that called himself a detective wanted to solve every mystery there was to solve. He was about the age of eight when the Greek goddess of harvest went missing. He was very curious about this sort of thing because gods and goddesses never get kidnapped because the kidnapper will get caught and killed within minutes or a very short amount of time, so naturally he was very confused about why Persephone was not back in her throne at Olympus the next morning. Gaius’ favorite goddess is Persephone since his dad was a farmer, so he was immediately worried, but didn’t think about it much because he assumed that Zeus would take care of it. Since Persephone is the goddess of harvest, in her absence they would be on a crop drought.…

Throughout human history, recurring stories and themes pop up around the world, crossing borders of both language and culture. Though they can vary from tales of a great flood to how the world came to be, the most common and easily-identifiable is the Hero’s Journey. Outlined by Joseph Campbell, the Hero’s Journey is the story of a great person travelling to a strange, otherworldly place (literal or metaphorical,) facing a fearsome enemy, and returning to the “normal” world having gained wisdom and experience. The most famous of these tales, like The Odyssey or the Epic of Gilgamesh, have masculine heroes, defined by traits like bravery, strength, or fearlessness. However, two famous stories of a descent into a literal and metaphorical underworld…
