The Great Gatsby Chapter Notes
Chapter 1: The narrator, Nick Carraway, educates the reader on advice about not criticizing other before jumping into the story. This shows that Nick comes from a wealthy background and was educated well. Nick moves from the midwest to New York to make money off of selling bonds. He buys a small house in the nice neighborhood of West Egg. Nick goes over to the elite neighborhood of East Egg to meet with his cousin, Daisy Buchanan and her husband Tom Buchanan. Staying with them is the famous tennis player Jordan Baker who is friends with Daisy. At their house Nick mentions his neighbor, Mr. Gatsby, and his luxurious dwelling and Daisy seems interested. Tom suddenly gets a call from his mistress whom he is having an affair with.
Chapter 2:
Later Tom takes Nick through the “valley of ashes” and past the billboard of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg to meet his mistress Myrtle Wilson who is the wife of a mechanic, George Wilson, near New York City. Once there they meet up with Catherine, Myrtle’s sister and the Mckees. They all get very drunk and discuss how much they hate their married partners.
Chapter 3: Nick observes Gatsby’s crazy, enormous parties that go on for many hours into the night. He is finally invited to one via one of Gatsby’s chauffeurs. Once there, he …show more content…
Gatsby was supposed to inherit money from Cody, but his wife took it all. A couple and Tom stop by the Gatsby residence and invite Gatsby to dinner however they leave without him. At the next party, Tom and Daisy show up. Daisy and Gatsby go to Nick’s house to get some quiet and talk while Tom shows interest in a famous actress present at the party. At the very end of the party Nick and Gatsby discuss Daisy. Gatsby wants Daisy to drop everything and leave Tom to live with Gatsby and marry
