Many people see the words “Civil Rights Movement” and automatically think of the bus boycott, Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Ku Klux Klan. However, the movement was much more than that. In the book At the Dark End of the Street: Black Women, Rape, and Resistance- A New History of the Civil Rights Movement from Rosa Parks to the Rise of Black Power by Danielle L. McGuire, the author shows us some of what was happening in the lesser known parts of the movement focusing on how sexual violence against both women and men played a big part in the Civil Rights Movement. The book starts at nearly the beginning of the movement (1940s) and spans throughout the whole movement, seeming to mainly focus on the rape case of one Recy Taylor in 1944, as the book begins and ends with the story of Mrs. Taylor.…

The Little Prisoner by Jane Elliott This book was a powerful if not over powering story of a child whose step father abused her on every level of abuse; physical, mental, sexual, and emotional. The author of this book Jane, a pseudonym for the actual child, made the book come full circle. It started in the court room and was brought back to that pivotal moment when she is forced to face her attacker as an adult. It shows the reader the reaction of someone who clearly has no understanding the effects the child abuse Jane endured because the officer treated her like she was overreacting.…

Regret is the feeling of disappointment or sorrow over a lost or missed opportunity. Often people get too caught up in their own lives to realise the bigger picture and they miss these opportunities. Once their eyes are opened, by an event or person, they are filled with regret for not paying attention to the other important parts of their lives. This feeling of regret from missed opportunities is what Tom Benecke felt as he clung to the window sill. The short story, “Contents of the Dead Man’s Pockets”, by Jack Finney is about regret and reveals to the readers that getting too caught up in one’s own life causes regret.…

In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, conflict - both internal and external - portrays a major development in the theme and plot of the young boys in this novel. On an island composed of only pre-adolescent boys, it is unquestionable that there would be conflict amongst them. Golding blatantly shows the reader the external conflicts that occur between one another, including both physical and verbal altercations. The author also cryptically gives the reader a display of the conflict the boys struggle with within themselves and their own thoughts. Despite the many instances of external conflict, the subtle internal conflicts are much more critical to the plot and overall theme of Lord of the Flies.…
