In today’s Gospel, Jesus had travelled to the region of Caesarea Philippi. Jesus asked his disciples: “Who do people say that the Son of Man is”? The disciples replied: “Some say that you are John the Baptist, Elijah or Jeremiah or one of the prophets”. Then Jesus looked directly at his disciples and asked: “But who do you say that I am”? Immediately Simon Peter looked at Jesus and said: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Jesus then looked at Simon Peter and said: “Blessed are you, Simon! This has been revealed to you by my Father. And I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the nether world shall not prevail against it”! Jesus plays on Peter's name which is the same word for

Secondly, Jesus is the foundation stone of a belief that God is present in the world and that God can be known and experienced. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:6-11 ESV). Dietrich Bonhoeffer writes in Christ the Center, “Even as the risen one, Jesus Christ remains the man Jesus in time and space. Because Jesus Christ is human, he is present in time and space; because Jesus Christ is God, he is eternally…

The conflict between the Christians and the Jesus Seminar has been an ongoing struggle since 1985. The Jesus Seminar, founded by Robert Funk, originated in 1985 as around 70 biblical scholars set out to determine the legitimacy of Jesus’ sayings (Dart). The Seminar focused on the historicity of Jesus using the best methods of science and literary criticism as it pertains to the Bible. Funk believed that the gospel writers had made Jesus into a “larger than life” figure in order to satisfy their religious desires. The Jesus Seminar’s goal is to rid the historical figure of Jesus from “Christian legend and myth” and to find out who Jesus really was and what he really said (Craig).…

John 11:17-32 presents Jesus’ conversations with Martha and Mary as well as his proclamation about his true identity. In his dialogue with Martha, Christ is acknowledged by her imperfectly as “Lord.” Martha knows that Jesus has power and authority over the process of dying and death; however, to her, he is just a miracle-worker and not the Christ, even though she calls him “the Messiah the Son of God” (v. 27). In an attempt to help Martha understand who he is, Christ reveals his identity to her through his “I Am” proclamation. Jesus tries to help Martha comprehend that he is not just someone who can give life and resurrect people, but rather he is in his very essence or being “resurrection” and “life,” because he is the “egō eimi” or God.…

I think some of the answers may have been different depending on who was asked, their upbringing, and religion. I realized that some of the questions could be quite difficult to answer if you didn’t have time to study the questions because individuals do not always look deeply into certain aspects of their faith until being prodded. When asked who is Jesus and why was he born?…
