Good That Community College

The article “The Good That Community Colleges Do, Part 1” by Rob Jenkins evaluates some of the things they do well at community colleges and the opportunities it creates for the students. Jenkins states, “Recent studies on the value of two-year colleges were contradictory because what we do well is hard to measure” (“The Good That Community Colleges Do, Part 1”). The thee things that Jenkins focuses on that do well at and creates an awesome opportunity for students are: the advantages of the open doors, second chances, and early entries. The first thing that Jenkins focuses on is the open doors. What Jenkins is meaning by the open-door police is that they will accept anyone with a high school diploma or a GED no matter what their test scores were in the past. Even though most of these students coming to a two-year college will have to be placed into a remedial course to improve in the subjects that they are struggling in to bring them up to the college-level smartcard. Jenkins believes, “there’s nothing community colleges can do except help those students try to overcome their deficiencies. The community colleges offer a great program for students who are still in high school. Some people know it as “dual enrollment”. This program if for the students who are in high school that find their self’s ready to something more challenging. Most of these student’s who go through this program find their self transferring to a state university and they usually do really well as freshman. They are already prepared for the type of work they are going to have so they will end up having the better grade then the students who were not able to take this program. But without the local two-year colleges fewer students and their families would not be able to take part in this great opportunity and benefit from
