A is for Annette, Steven's best friend/girlfriend.
B is for Brother, Steven has a little brother Jeffery.
C is for Cubana Be Cubana Bop the song that Steven gets to play a drum solo in for Jazz band.
D is for Drums, Steven a drummer and the drums were his escape when he found out that his brother had cancer.
E is for ER, the day of Steven's concert Jeffrey got a fever and Steven had to leave his concert to rush Jeffrey to the E.R.
F is for Failing Grades, Steven grades begin to drop because he starts neglecting his classwork and homework.
G is for.graduation, the book begins and ends at Steven's eighth grade graduation.
H is for "Happy Early Birthday Samantha" what Steven says when he gives Samantha (a cancer patient) a pair of his drumsticks.

R is for Renee Albert the girl that Steven has an enormous crush on.
S is for Special Sticks; Steven's calls his favorite pair of drumsticks his 'special sticks' because they were signed by his favorite drummer.
T is for Tic Tacs, the souvenir that Jeffrey brings back to Steven after returning from the hospital
U is for Unfair; the word that Steven uses to describe the universe in one of his journal entries.
V is for the Visitor game that Jeffrey and Steven made up; when visitor came to see Jeffrey the two would rate the visitor based on weather or not they were "smiley" or "frowny."
W is for "What's the point", Steven begins repeating the saying "what's the point" when he realizes that Jeffy is sick and the family is having financial troubles.
X is for x-ray, Steven mentions that Jeffrey had to get a certain type of x-ray called a CT Scan.
Y is for Young, Steven and Jeffrey are both young when Jeffrey is diagnosed with Leukemia.
Z is for the Zone, Steven says that he gets into the Zone when he is playing the drum extremely
