I'm sure you have been somewhere with a screaming kid and thought why are the parents letting their child scream. It comes to question on what makes a good parent? I think most of what makes a good parent a lot has to do with opinion instinct, values and what your beliefs which will change the the upbringing of a kid. I think that there is a lot of standards as a parent that most people can agree with and then there is a grey area that is usually the choice of the parent which will help form the adult that the child turns into. In The Glass Castle a lot of boundaries were broken and questions formed of the mental capacity of the parents in the book leaving the reader wondering how was it possible they were even left to take care of children. Rex did some things that may have been unforgivable by most opinions of what is right and wrong such as when Walls talks about how she learned to swim Rex throws her in the water and says “If you don't want to sink, you better figure out how to swim.”(66) This makes the case for someone to discuss how potentially Rosemary could be the better parent. Rose mary did have her points where she made a very it clear she was teaching an important lesson and the most unforgettable one for me is when she is telling Jeannette about the Joshua Tree. She tells Jeanette “It’s the Joshua tree’s struggle that gives it inner beauty,”(38) I feel that this is a staple in the book for Rosemary. I think without Rosemary saying this to Jeannette she might have never tried to see the positive out of everything that was going on in her life and believed that through all the struggles she received as a young girl it was going to make her even more beautiful as she grew up. A strong thing that Rosemary taught was to always be yourself even as Jeannette got older in the book although I think Rosemary being herself was her
