Animals portray joy and release so when an animal suffers apart of human may suffer as well. When the horse died in the book Jonas felt sadness as he watched the horse hurt and fall to the ground not to rise again. These animals symbolize feelings within the book. But I can only imagine that when Jonas gets to Elsewhere and see those birds flying in the air, it brings him happiness to know that he did it.
