The Giver takes place in a distant future where people have given up things like color and memories. Memories are given to the Receiver of Memory Jonas so that he may hold all the pain of things like war and wounds of all kinds so the rest of his society does not have to. In the end of the Giver while Jonas and Gabriel are escaping they survive because he hears things like music which the Giver never gave him any memories of.
